Specialist doctors (on the GMC Specialist Register) can prescribe medical cannabis. There must be a clear unmet need from conventional treatments. Prescriptions are only initiated after a peer review process involving other specialist doctors. Medical cannabis treatments are unlicensed treatments and so the safety, risks and benefits need careful consideration. Treatments are available in the form of sublingual oil or inhalation (vapourised) with a cartridge or flower (max 1g per day). Medical cannabis is a controlled drug which requires a new prescription every month. Ongoing medical monitoring is required.
